- Title
La trahison des traductions: textes français dans les collections Brasiliana et Biblioteca Histórica Brasileira.
- Authors
Venancio, Giselle Martins
- Abstract
This article explores three key texts published in France at different points in time - one by Jean de Léry (sixteenth century); one by Jean Baptiste Debret (early nineteenth century); and finally one by Max Leclerc (end of the nineteenth century). All were rendered into Portuguese by the same translator, Sérgio Milliet, and were published either in the collection Brasiliana, by the Companhia Editora Nacional, or the Biblioteca Histórica Brasileira, by Martins Editions. Identifying the mediation process developed by Sérgio Milliet as translator, annotator, and author of prefaces to the Portuguese versions of these French works, this article intends to contribute to a better understanding of how and why, through the process of translation and crafting of explanatory notes and prefaces, the collections Brasiliana and Biblioteca Histórica Brasileira created a composite image of Brazil through the vector of foreign writers reconfigured and explicated by Brazilian intellectuals.
