This article discusses the various Japanese poetic forms, their rules and application. Particular focus is given to the key to creating a traditional haiku. The principles of comparison, contrast, and association are used in an English haiku. Other Japanese poetic forms are senryu, haibun and tanka. Tanka refers to a subjective poem that possesses an asymmetrical form of line lengths. There are psychological implications associated with the process of creating a haiku or senryu.
