- Abstract
Linguists working with language in use have had great interest in the construction of linguistic corpora, both transcribed and codified by using standardized criteria. In the case of sign languages, these tasks present a special challenge, inasmuch as sign languages do not have a widely accepted writing system. This paper presents a proposal for a transcription system for sign language discourse data which is detailed and standardized enough to allow for different levels of linguistic analysis (phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic-pragmatic, discourse levels), and for contrastive analysis across sign languages. After toy experience, in which an ordinary text editor was used, we tested ELAN, a software developed by a team at Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics. ELAN provides the synchronization of the videotaped image with a transcription in multiple tiers, allowing for a more accurate observation of the signs. It was also analyzed other proposals for transcribing sign languages to standardize our system so as to make it publicly available to the sign language researcher community.
