Title
Freeze-drying Mary Rose artefacts.
Abstract
The article reports on the preservation of wooden artefacts recovered from the Mary Rose ship with the help of chemical engineers from the University of Cambridge. Waterlogged wooden artefacts are preserved by freeze drying with the use of a bulking agent that stops the object shrinking or cracking. A test was conducted by student Sam Jones and Mark Jones of the Mary Rose Trust on a chelating agent for its ability to bind iron atoms in the timbers.
