- Abstract
The article focuses on issues concerning human-environment-society interactions within the context of decision making in engineering projects. It cites sustainability factors that have to be considered in project planning with particular focus on dam engineering. It discusses the environmental and social impacts of dams built around the world and underscores the need for public participation in reducing negative impacts of dam projects. It features the ethical principles established by some professional associations as well as the role played by several factors, such as culture and religion, in the success of engineering projects. Elements that project developers must incorporate to attain a sustainable process for dam project development are also provided.
