- Title
Other "Ways of Seeing": Female Viewers of the Knidian Aphrodite.
- Authors
LEE, MIREILLE M.
- Abstract
The article discusses the view of women on the Aphrodite marble statue at Knidos by Praxiteles and its significance to hetairai as the first female nude monument in Western art. Topics include the lust elicited by the scandalous nudity of the Knidian Aphrodite on male viewers and modern suggestions that the statue was also intended for female viewership as well as male worshippers and voyeurs. Also mentioned are the pudica gesture of the statue and courtesan Phryne as the model of Praxiteles.
