- Abstract
This article presents measures designed to prevent the spread of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and cervical cancer. Measures include an update on cervical cytology screening guidelines and vaccines in development. Summary of guidelines concerning initiation of Pap screening and follow-up of abnormal Pap results in adolescents as well as discussion regarding the rationale for those guidelines are presented. On the other hand, vaccines in development are virus-like particles which are recombinant viral capsids and have the potential to be highly effective strategies for primary prevention of HPV-related disease.
