- Abstract
This article discusses a monograph by Emily Wang that explores the emotional influence of the Decembrists, a group of Russian nobles who challenged the autocracy in the 19th century, on Russian society. Wang coins the term "civic sentimentalism" to describe the unique brand of sentimentalism expressed by Decembrist writers, contrasting it with the "libertine worldview" of Alexander Pushkin. The article highlights Wang's analysis of the relationships between Pushkin and Decembrist poets, as well as their poetic exchanges on Russian history. Wang also examines the transformation of the Decembrists' worldview during their exile and discusses Leo Tolstoy's criticism of their civic sentimentalism in his novel War and Peace. Overall, the article praises Wang's fresh approach to understanding the emotional culture of the era and the impact of the Decembrists on Russian political and literary history.
