Welles's "Voodoo" Macbeth: Neither Vodou nor Welles? Discuss.
- Authors
RIPPY, MARGUERITE
- Abstract
The article discusses the analysis by Benjamin Hilb of "Vodou Macbeth," the nickname of the 1936 New York production of the late William Shakespeare's "Macbeth," directed by the late Orson Welles, by Federal Theatre Project. Arguments discussed include "Macbeth," by Welles playing on cultural preoccupations in the realm of modernist primitivism, and strengthening of Hilb's approach by taking a more inclusive critical stance that focuses on multivocality.
