- Abstract
The article presents a study which explored the possibility of using the stems of common milkweed plants as source for natural cellulose fibers. The composition, structure and properties of natural cellulose fibers extracted from milkweed stems were characterized. This study found that milkweed stems fibers have about 75% cellulose, which is higher than cellulose in milkweed floss but lower than that in cotton and linen. It was also found that fibers from milkweed stems have low crystallinity when compared with cotton and linen.
