- Abstract
The article highlights a study which examines the phylogenetic relationship between surviving jawless fishes, hagfish, lampreys and sharks. Researchers have found that in hagfish, development of the embryonic structure called the neural crest and expression of the genes there are similar to what it seen in lampreys and jawed vertebrate. However, they are still investigating the basic design of vertebrates and if they can resolve the fishes' relationship, then they can identify what kind of shape would have been there in the common ancestor of invertebrates.
