- Abstract
The article outlines the financial difficulty experienced by research ships in the U.S. These projects are in dire need of additional funding to further their experiments on various fields of endeavor. Because of such problem, the number of vessels in shrinking and the annual number of research days at sea has been cut by 20%. It revealed that the research fleet is overseen by the University National Oceanographic Laboratory Systems (UNOLS), a consortium of 61 research institutes wherein they provide vital platforms for scientists investigating topics ranging from ocean chemistry and circulation to sea-floor core extractions. In 2000, they have 5,000 research days at sea and lately it has been reduced to 4,000.
