- Abstract
The article reports that shortages of electricity in South Africa resulted in an increase in the price of platinum in January 2008. Blackouts lasting up to several hours started taking place in the country during the month. According to Eskom, the state-owned utility which provides most of the nation's electricity, it will reduce supplies to industrial customers by 10% to help stabilize the situation. The firm Anglo Platinum and Implats, the largest platinum producers in the world, say that the power shortages may result in less production of the metal in the year 2008.
