The reports that over the past eight years, about a dozen inexpensive or open-access journals have been established to compete directly with an expensive commercial journal. It has been observed that the inexpensive journals are faring better than their more costly competitors. One is example is the "Evolutionary Ecology Research" which was created in 1999 by Michael Rosenzweig, a researcher at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
