- Title
"Nienaturalny Stan JednoroŻca": Translating Komunyakaa's "Unicorn" into Polish.
- Authors
Jakubiak, Katarzyna
- Abstract
This essay focuses on the translation of Yusef Komunyakaa's poem "Unnatural State of the Unicorn," into Polish language. Unlike the English language, the Polish language does not have a generic word for "a human being" that would simultaneously mean "a male." In the original, the complexity and the passionate power of the speaker's assertion of self derive exactly from the impossibility of divorcing the speaker's humanity from his masculinity. However, the structure of the Polish language demands that the translator of the poem should pry the concepts of humanity and masculinity apart.
