- Abstract
Mycoplasma bovis is a pathogen heavily involved in bovine respiratory disease, so much so that it is often isolated in association with bacteria. The absence of the cell wall makes it intrinsically resistant to some antibiotics such as those belonging to the `-lactam class. Furthermore, it is capable of evading the immune system by causing lymphocyte apoptosis. These aspects imply the need to reach a diagnosis in the shortest possible time. In this regard, immunohistochemistry (IHC) represents a very specifi c diagnostic technique and, compared to culture, requires less time. However, it shows lower sensitivity as it is infl uenced by the type of sample and the sampling site. In light of these reasons, PCR remains the diagnostic technique that continues to fi nd the greatest use.
