- Title
Holy Name Repetition as a Spiritual Exercise and Therapeutic Technique.
- Authors
Oman, Doug; Driskell, Joseph D.
- Abstract
The frequent repetition throughout the day of a holy name may address a pressing need for spiritual and psychological sustenance in the midst of today's fast-paced modern civilization. Identifying pastoral and clinical uses, we describe the validity of this ancient practice in light of faith traditions and social scientific theories, reviewing evidence for physical and mental health benefit. Pastoral, educational and clinical resources are identified, and directions for further research are suggested. Because of its simplicity and universality, this practice appears ideal for experimental clinical research on spirituality as well as for pastoral and clinical work among both general and low-functioning populations.
