A biography of Georges Cuvier, a French zoologist who was instrumental in systematizing the classification of animals, is presented. He was born on August 23, 1769 in Montbeliard, France and studied at the University of Stuttgart. He was appointed as a professor of animal anatomy at the newly established Musée National d'Histoire Naturelle. His belief in the functional integration of organisms resulted in his producing animal classification system based on embranchments.
