- Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the profile of fecal progesterone metabolites throughout pregnancy in sows. Thus, we collected fecal samples from five pregnant female pigs from before mating to 15 days after parturition. Fecal progesterone metabolites showed average levels of 13,546.57±12,808.08 (308.11-78,067.82) ng/g of dry feces during pregnancy, and an increasing profile, reaching maximum levels close to parturition. The data corroborate the serum hormonal profile already described in the literature. The hormonal dynamics also expresses the delay in progesterone metabolism in the species. The results demonstrate that the analysis of fecal progesterone metabolites is a simple and non-invasive tool for longitudinal hormonal monitoring of pregnancy in swine, reducing the inherent risks and stress in restraining and handling the animals.
