- Abstract
The paper is an overview of the main Italian versions of Vergil's Aeneid, published in the 16th and 17th Centuries, and of their illustrative sets, which could be considered as a kind of source for the artistic imagery displayed in the iconographic program of Palazzo Bonaccorsi's Galleria dell'Eneide. In the 16th Century, Vergil's matter has been object of many attempts of translations, which concern single books or the whole poem, which make use of different poetic meters (tercets, stanzas, hendecasyllables), and take the form of acute vulgarisations (Annibal Caro) or orginal rewritings (Pietro Aretino) of Aeneid. An important aspect of the Italian Renaissance reception of Vergil's poem is the editorial packaging modelled on the Orlando furioso Venetian editions, with their apparatus of dedications, allegories, poetic summaries, front matters, iniziali parlanti, and first of all illustrations: from this point of view, the rewritings of Aeneid realized by the Venetian writer Lodovico Dolce are particularly meaningful.
