Long-term outcomes after severe acute kidney injury in critically ill patients: the SALTO study. 10.1007/s00134-015-4151-0. 26626062 4 Oeyen S, De Corte W, Benoit D. Long-term quality of life in critically ill patients with acute kidney injury treated with renal replacement therapy: a matched cohort study. AKI is a frequent complication in critically ill patients and portends poor short and long-term outcomes, including an increase in readmissions, cardiovascular events, and progression to chronic kidney disease (CKD) [[1]]. This suggests that the process that led to AKI drives ongoing worse outcomes rather than AKI per se.
