- Abstract
The essay "Dying with dignity and euthanasia: at the heart of medicine" analyzes the decriminalization of euthanasia in Colombia through Constitutional Court ruling C-239 in 1997. The importance of using the clinical method to understand the ethical issues related to euthanasia is highlighted, and the history of euthanasia and the emergence of the concept of dying with dignity are mentioned. It also discusses changes in sensitivity towards death and legal reforms that allow individuals to make decisions about their dying process. The creation of the Constitutional Court in Colombia is mentioned and how it has allowed people the right to decide about their lives, including the possibility of accessing euthanasia in cases of serious and incurable illnesses. The article also addresses the importance of ethically reflecting on death, the need for companionship and genuine words for those near death, and the inclusion of art and humanities in medical education to address patient suffering. The need for doctors to learn to deal with finitude and death, and to provide appropriate care to patients in critical moments, is emphasized.
