- Abstract
The article discusses U.S. foreign relations with the Caribbean Area throughout the tenure in office of U.S. President John F. Kennedy during the Cold War, with a particular focus on U.S. relations with Haiti under Haitian President François Duvalier. An overview of the conflicting nature of Kennedy's efforts to democratize Haiti and Duvalier's anti-communist role in the Caribbean region, including U.S. economic assistance to Haiti and Duvalier's support for the U.S. policy of containing Cuban communism, is provided.
