- Authors
Wilcock, Gordon K.; Dawbarn, David
- Abstract
The article focuses on the nerve growth factor (NGF) and neurotrophins in Alzheimer's disease (AD). It discusses the distribution of NGF receptors in brain as cholinergic cells, neurotrophic and neuroprotective properties of NGF, physiology of NGF in relation to Alzheimer's disease, regulation of NGF, adverse effects of NGF, other neurotrophic factors, including, brain derived neurotrophic factor and neurotrophin-3 which rescues neurons from neurodegenerative processes, the neurotrophin receptor system, its future developments and therapeutic issues. It was found that NGF receptor loss and decrease in trophic support cause neuronal degeneration in AD.
