- Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the activities related to vocabulary teaching in the 5, 6, 7 and 8th grade Turkish textbooks in the context of the 2018 Turkish Language Teaching Program. In this qualitative research, 5, 6, 7 and 8th grade Turkish textbooks prepared by the Ministry of Education were examined with the document analysis method. A total of 128 texts with 32 texts for each class level and 201 activities based on these texts constitute the research material in this study. Free reading texts were excluded. The data of the study was obtained from the vocabulary gains in the 2018 Turkish Course Curriculum and the activities in the textbooks created in this direction. The analysis of the research data was done by content analysis which is one of the qualitative data analysis methods. Data were also analysed based on Piaget's Cognitive Development Theory, Teaching Principles, Bloom's Taxonomy, Information Processing Theory, and Gardner's Multiple Intelligence Theory. In this research, it is concluded that Context-Based Vocabulary Teaching is mostly used in vocabulary teaching activities, the applications are mostly repetitive, the activities are generally at knowledge and comprehension level, and activities addressing high-level cognitive skills are not sufficient.
