- Abstract
The paper focuses on examining regional innovation instruments that are available in Lithuanian Marine sector and to suggest how to enhance innovation and competitiveness of the marine industries through functional elements synergy. The marine sector in this context is defined as processing and supporting industry by delivering technology and services, while incorporating primary producers in ship building and aquaculture. Innovation in this context is defined as covering incremental, commercial, technological and organizational fields of Marine sector areas. The technological status, competitive strength and interests for Lithuanian Marine industry cooperation have been considered for the main subsectors and economic activities of the Marine sector: the Competitiveness of the marine industry, Marine environmental protection, Shipbuilding and energy, Safety and security, Human resources and training, Natural resources offshore mining and Fishing. There seems to be untapped potential for competiveness in expanding existing and developing new forms of innovation among subsectors on Lithuanian Marine sector level. Suggestions are made on how this can be achieved by enhancing existing instruments and finding new original ones through focusing on available resources; sharing information, facilities and equipment; transforming the different competences available in Lithuanian Marine subsector functional elements.
