- Abstract
Drawing on political sociology's conceptualization of ethnicity and associated strategic nationalism, this article analyzes the role that local, regional, national, and international actors play in the implementation of the Juba Peace Agreement (JPA) in Sudan, with special attention to Darfur. We conduct a content analysis of the JPA and documentary sources in order to identify the actors and the roles they play in accordance with the provisions of the JPA. We pinpoint challenges and opportunities that surface in the implementation process and what needs to be done to implement the JPA against the backdrop of the current sociopolitical context in Sudan and especially in Darfur. The analysis uncovers factors that support and/or jeopardize the JPA, while stressing a message of hope about the possible effective implementation of the JPA. In so doing, the article engages academics, policy, and public audiences by offering insightful perspectives on the topic and illuminating ways to strengthen peace in Sudan.
