- Abstract
This article reports that in a time when many public and environmental health programs and departments are grossly underfunded and understaffed, Vice Admiral Richard Carmona, the 17th Surgeon General of the United States, brings a message of change and hope, and a call to action with his national mandate for improving health in the United States. Carmona's remarks centered around plans to put into action his understanding of, commitment to, and passion for public health by moving health forward through a focused and ambitious portfolio that will address many of the ailing public health programs in the United States as well as numerous misconceptions on the part of the general public and the media.
