- Title
Watervliet Shakers through the Eyes of Oneida Perfectionists, 1863-1875.
- Authors
Wonderley, Anthony
- Abstract
The article discusses the relationship between the Shaker community of Watervliet, New York, and the Oneida Community (O.C.), a perfectionist religious commune in Oneida, New York, between 1863 and 1875. Focus is given to each community's mutual interest in the other's labor-saving technology, such as the Watervliet community's washing machine and the Oneida Community's corn-cutting machine. The way in which the Oneida Community's belief in free love and the Shaker's adherence to celibacy eventually undermined this relationship is also explained.
