- Abstract
The article discusses the historic newspaper "The Witness" due to the acquisition of various volumes by the Hamilton College Library. The paper was associated with the Oneida Society, a communal religious group centered in Upstate New York, and edited by Society leader and patriarch John Humphrey Noyes beginning in 1837. The author discusses the paper's connection to Noyes' evolving concept of perfectionism, as well as Noyes' obsession with a women named Abigail Merwin. His belief in free love and disdain for monogamous marriage are also briefly touched upon.
