- Abstract
The article discusses the relationship between American Roman Catholic monk, author, and activist Thomas Merton and the Shakers. It examines his several visits to the Shaker community at Pleasant Hill, Kentucky between 1959 and 1968. The author comments on Merton's views on Shaker music and dance. He also considers several shared beliefs between Merton and the Shakers, noting Merton's monasticism, his pursuit of paradise consciousness, and his countercultural beliefs in pacifism and equal rights.
