- Abstract
Risk factors related to the nursing diagnosis "risk for unstable blood glucose level" proposed by NANDA-International concern diabetic or susceptible patients to develop the disease by not clearly mentioning the associated factors in critical non-diabetic patients. The objective was to identify in the literature the risk factors associated with unstable blood glucose level in critically ill patients. Integrative review with search in Cinahl, Pubmed and Lilacs databases, with the following descriptors: "hyperglycemia", "hypoglycemia", "risk factors" and "critical care" in Portuguese and English. Sample composed of eight articles. The studies were published in English language between 2004 and 2012. They were divided into two categories: risk factors associated with hyperglycemia and those related to hypoglycemia. Risk factors associated with hyperglycaemia: diabetes, acute coronary syndrome, age, HbA1c, corticosteroid dose, intravenous dextrose, enteral carbohydrate, norepinephrine and parenteral nutrition; and hypoglycemia: strict glucose control protocols, mechanical ventilation, hospitalization time, history of diabetes, sepsis, renal failure, vasoactive medications, age, low weight, higher APACHE II score and glycemic variability. There is a lack of information in the literature on some risk factors, which shows the need for research related to nursing care for patients with unstable glycemia.
