- Abstract
Prior to 2015, medical assistance in dying in Canada was illegal. Effective June 2016, federal legislation allows eligible adults in Canada to request medical assistance in dying (MAiD ) to end suffering. Given this profound legal and philosophical shift in end-of-life care, this review paper provides an overview of Canadian legislation and provides healthcare professionals (HCPs) practical guidance for enacting the legislation in a manner that protects the rights of the HCP and is respectful of the patient’s right to end unbearable suffering. Criteria for patient eligibility and the role of the (HCPs) in assessing, preparing for and administering this intervention are described. Vascular access, a critical step in MAiD, will also be addressed.
