The article discusses the history of France in the 16th and 17th centuries, with a focus on 17th century noblewoman Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, marquise de Sévigné, and expressions of her attitudes towards Italian in her correspondence. Topics discussed include evidence of Mme de Sévigné's admiration for Italian language and culture in her letters, the practice of French writers such as 19th century French novelist and playwright Honoré de Balzac using Italian in correspondence, and the use of Italian as a form of intertextuality.
