- Title
Nation Building and Rebuilding: The American Red Cross in Italy During the Great War.
- Authors
Irwin, Julia F.
- Abstract
The article discusses the role of the American Red Cross in Italy during World War I. By the Geneva Treaty and Congressional mandate, the Red Cross had been designated an official U.S. organization for humanitarian relief, even though it was privately funded, and thus garnered social and political status unattainable by other privately-sponsored relief groups. The author explores how Red Cross volunteers acted to foster American values and social agendas among Italians and helped implement the foreign relations policies for the administration of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson.
