- Abstract
The article explores the issues of citizenship and military service in the context of the history of Italian-American relations in the early twentieth century. The author reflects on the naturalization of Italian immigrants to the U.S. and the status of U.S. citizenship. According to Italian citizenship definitions, Italian emigrants were eligible for military service in Italy. The article explores the resulting conflicts arising from notions of American duty and expatriation. Other topics include dual citizenship, military conscription, and diplomatic pressure.
