- Abstract
The article presents a profile of the U.S. Civil War admiral David D. Porter regarding his command history and his views of politics and military command. Porter's own military career is overviewed, noting the events surrounding his rise to the rank of admiral. Porter's career is contrasted with that of the Army General and Congressman Nathaniel Prentice Banks. The interactions between Banks and Porter during the Red River campaign of the Civil War are highlighted, noting the disagreements between the two surrounding command strategy and communication methods.
