- Abstract
The article looks at 17th-18th century Irish painter Garret Morphey, focusing on a recently discovered painting by him, a portrait of Margaret Butler. It discusses his career, including studying with English painter Edmund Ashfield and receiving commissions largely from Jacobite Catholic patrons. French stylistic elements in the portrait, including in Butler's dress, are discussed in relation to the Jacobite cause.
