The article focuses on preparing high school students for English language in the U.S. for whole-class discussions by teaching them to annotate texts and share ideas with peers to feel confident. Topics discussed include teaching close reading, writing and annotation through lessons using short stories, teaching annotation strategies like circling unfamiliar words to find their meaning and sharing the short story "Memorial Day" regarding a boy's protest for his parents' divorce.
