- Title
TOO MUCH OF TOO LITTLE: GUTHLAC AND THE TEMPTATION OF EXCESSIVE FASTING.
- Authors
DOWNEY, SARAH
- Abstract
The article discusses fasting in the medieval period. It cites "The Summoner's Tale," by Geoffrey Chaucer to discuss the concept of fasting using the techniques usually used by medieval homilists. It also explores the false opinions on fasting as contained in Saint Guthlac of Croyland's early-eight century biography. The poems "Guthlac A" and Guthlac B," as well as Felix's Latin prose "Vita Sancti Guthlaci" are also cited.
