- Abstract
Consumer product reviews, expressed through online reviews, have a significant influence on a company’s financial performance. However, empirical investigations examining the influence of customer sentiments on idiosyncratic stock value are non-existent, and the impact of declining economic capability as a moderating factor has yet to be thoroughly investigated. It is within this context that this study is situated. The results of this study show that customer sentiment has a negative effect on idiosyncratic stock returns during periods of declining purchasing power. It is also interesting to note that, in a context of a minor decrease in purchasing power, there is a moderate relationship between clients’ positive, negative, and neutral sentiments and idiosyncratic stock returns.
