- Abstract
The article reports that the teacher of basic reporting faces a tough job in getting beginning journalism students to copyedit their own stories. Students are being introduced to new material, new style and new techniques at a high pace. Because they are just learning journalistic writing style, many of their mistakes can be attributed to lack of knowledge. A second cause of mistakes is that students, who know better, are careless with their copy, Reading experts tell that most readers select minimum cues to comprehend the meaning of a passage. Readers tend to read for meaning, and they tend to pass over mistakes in spelling, punctuation, grammar and style. Brighter reporting students, who are able to read rapidly with high comprehension, might be the most negligent at copyediting.
