The article presents a study by Dan Luo and colleagues on finding that DNA hydrogels improve the efficiency of cell-free protein production. Using the hydrogel approach, Luo and colleagues synthesized 16 different proteins, which were up to 300 times more efficient than solution based cell-free synthesis. Researchers concluded that the increased efficiency of transcription is a result of three possible mechanisms.
