- Title
Phytochemicals and Cancer Prevention.
- Authors
Watson, Ronald Ross
- Abstract
This article reports that the role of phytochemicals in cancer prevention has recently been subjected to a detailed review. This vital promise raises the important challenge of identifying, purifying and making directly available the active members of this group of phytochemicals as supplements to join those other nutrients already known to exhibit cancer- protective effects. Phytochemicals inhibit carcinogenesis by inducing phase 11 enzymes, which inactivate carcinogens; by inhibiting phase I enzymes, which convert procarcinogens into carcinogens.
