Syria's Endgame.
- Authors
Totten, Michael J.
- Abstract
The article looks at the war in Syria, as of July 2013. The author describes the war as a fight to the end between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the opposition, which it notes includes both the Free Syrian Army and the Islamist group Jabhat al-Nusra, or Nusra Front, which is associated with the terrorist group al-Qaeda. He describes the sectarian dimension of the war, primarily between the Alawite religious minority and the country's majority of Sunni Muslims. He expresses the view that the U.S. and other Western countries should have aided the Free Syrian Army earlier in the conflict. Alternative U.S. strategies and their prospects for generating a democratic and U.S.-friendly Syrian government in the long run are discussed.
