An essay is presented of the economic and theatrical aspects of theatrical productions "Les Misérables" in 1985 and "Road" in 1986. Topics discussed include the iconic status and enduring value achieved by the productions in the British theatre, the support acquired by the play "Les Misérables" from theatre operators Royal Shakespeare Co. and Cameron Mackintosh Overseas Ltd., and the connection between theatre and neoliberalism.
