- Abstract
The article describes the myths and realities of the lesbian experience with alcoholism. The treatment strategies that address the special problems and needs of lesbian alcoholics, and need to overcome homophobia among social workers and social service agencies are also discussed. It is not surprising then, that the lesbian alcoholic, as a member of all three of these oppressed minorities, has received even less productive attention and has experienced a triple burden of social stigma. This situation has not changed significantly in recent years, in spite of the gains made by women toward obtaining equal status in society and the somewhat increased societal tolerance of both homosexuality and alcoholism. Rigorous empirical research on any aspect of a drinking problem among lesbians appears to be nonexistent. Thus, the available information on this population is almost exclusively composed of anecdotal clinical reports. Specific areas to be discussed include the incidence and prevalence of alcohol problems among lesbian identity and experience.
