The article discusses teaching cause-and-effect through the study of marine debris, particularly that caused by a spill of rubber bath toys from a cargo ship in the Pacific in 1992. It addresses the ability of the unit to integrate science with social studies, as well as addresses ways for students to think critically about mediating environmental problems with local action.
