- Abstract
The article presents a study which investigates the effects of using non-fiction trade books as part of a module-based science instruction. To start with, 156 third-grade students were administered a modified Draw-A-Scientist, which is based on the Draw-A-Scientist-Test. They were asked to illustrate through drawing their perception in a situation involving a scientist. At the end of the eight-week period, a group of trained scorers compared the drawings and answers of students who read books about scientists with those who did not. Through analysis, it was found that the drawings of students who had experienced the trade books showed expanded views of who does science, indicating the value of such books as a means of broadening students' representations of the scientists' activities.
