Categorizing Brain Cells.
- Abstract
The article presents a study about parietal cortex that considerably encodes the category or meaning of familiar visual images, as conducted by investigators from Harvard Medical School (HMS). According to the research, with David Freedman being the study's lead author and an HMS postdoctoral research fellow in neurobiology, the parietal cortex is an area of the brain where memories and categorization of things take place. As asserted, the categories are encoded by the activity of individual neurons and then proceeded to the parietal cortex which learns and recognizes the meaning of the things being observed. Considering the results, Freedman is optimistic this type of research will eventually contribute to a better understanding of neurological diseases and disorders.
